In acute conditions, they are painful after defecation but in chronic fissures, pain is often absent.

Causes –

It’s not completely clear what causes an anal fissure. Usually, anal fissures are caused due to constipation or frequent diarrhoea. While passing hard and bulky stool, the lining of the anal passage gets irritated.

This can cause cuts and tears. Similarly, passing stool frequently while suffering from diarrhoea can also irritate the tissue and result in a fissure.

Other factors –

  • Straining while passing stool.
  • During childbirth.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
  • Decreased blood flow to the rectal area.
  • Extra tight anal sphincter muscles.
  • Cancer of anus.
  • HIV.
  • Tuberculosis.
  • STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) such as Herpes and Syphilis.
  • Ulcerative colitis.
  • Poor toileting in young children.

If you suffer from IBD, Crohn’s disease, frequent constipation, obesity, anal intercourse or you have had fissures before, you may be at risk of developing anal fissure.

Anal fissures are usually caused by stretching of the anal mucous membrane beyond its capacity.

Superficial anal fissures generally get healed within a few weeks. But chronic and deep anal fissures do not heal by the time, they have to be treated.

Prevention –

The following may help prevent anal fissures:

  • Avoid straining when passing stool.
  • Prevent constipation by eating food rich in fibre, drink enough water, and avoid constipating agents (white bread, white pasta/pizza/noodles, eggs, cheese, sugar, coffee, chocolate, etc.)
  • Treat diarrhoea promptly to avoid anal strain.
  • Use soft toilet paper and cleaning with water, after toileting.
  • Change the diaper frequently in infants to prevent fissures.
  • Maintain proper hygiene of the anal region.
